Having played against the Scotland captain's brother last week  and having spoken to both of them, he said that one of the methods they were working on was to take a big step back in the crease before the ball was bowled and then a big movement forward, to ensure maximum possible weight transfer into the shot (ie there is greater weight transfer and power possible from the back then forward movement together rather than simply standing in your base and moving from there.) However, a few basic factors remain the same for power hitting:
1) Have a solid base and be balanced. The ball will go much further if you aren't wobbling about all over the place and off-balanced.
2) Keep your head and eyes still and don't lift your head. The temptation to do this is strong, but the likelihood is you'll ose sight of the ball and miss it altogether.
3) Accelerate through with your bottom hand (so for RHB, the right hand). This will increase power through the shot. Don't twist the wrist though, as you'll end up hitting it to mid wicket or turning the bat too much and missing the ball.
4) Don't collapse the back leg when hitting the shot, as this leads to a loss of power and balance.

So that's pretty much the coaching manual of how to do it, certainly for hitting straight sixes. Commonsense should apply as well - only hit the ball for 6 when you feel it is there to hit. If you're coming down the wicket, not every ball has to go for six - if it's not there, defend it or work it into the gaps. You can be just an effective run scorer chipping it into gaps, pushing it down the ground and sweeping as someone trying to blast it every ball wrecklessly.

I like Misbah's method of getting underneath the ball.  I use that method when hitting straight down the ground to slower bowlers, and it works beautifully.

Interesting topic, never saw this. Just glanced through few posts. Many important points have already been posted, I would like to add few strange points that helped ( now no time for cricket)

- Have a good bat that suits you , some bats naturally fit your style of play.Shape,Size & Weight are very important.Constantly changing it would spoil your rythm.
- Know your strong areas and never try to hit six where you know you are weak.Cut all the shots in air esp. in the danger zone.
- Once you know your hitting zone , practice bat swings if you love hitting SIX'es so much. Sometimes when we get into bad footwork, it hampers your big hits.If your footwork is messy in a particular season (sometimes a particular day), then go for ground strokes (unless you are Shewag kind of player). Just tell your mind "It's not my day to be a Hero"

Then golden rule that worked for me , never ever decide to hit a six beforehand  ( Main reason why people get out), unless the match situation demands nothing less than a SIX.To me when the ball is in zone, it feels like you exactly know the where the ball is heading, you'll get a felling that you can hit it for a SIX. All that happens instantly.

It can't be predetermined unless the bowler is not upto the mark or you are in a much superior class when compared to bowlers abilities.Obvioulsy even some sort of professionals cricketers (I mean who put in good hours of practice and take it as profession at some decent level) will make absolute mockery if I bowl or if I bat Wink against them. I mean knowing one's level of cricket is also very important.
Race to No 1 again ... started!

Starhi champion its easy to hit sixes and big sixes just learn to play defence and strokes first then u wil have confidence to hit sixes. no massive power iz required to hit sixes just it depends on how u hold the bat,timing,perfection... When u want to hit sixes hold the handle high it allows u to swing the bat fastly. good luck byeTongue

Get an MB Malik Bubber Sher bat - from just taking a ball and thrown it on an MB Malik Sher Amin bat face, it finally made me realise what a good bat can do.  What it has made me do is move away from my favourite Ihsan to use MB Malik Bubber Sher next year in T20's back here.  It's that good a bat!!

Yes Zuhair - I have access to practically all gears in Pakistan and India.  But no joke, the balls really fly off the MB Malik higher range bats and the edges are humungous.

I am a Power Hitting coach for the MLB in the USA and the power comes from your lower half. Your upper half is to stay loose. There are some great baseball/softball and now they have cricket training equipment that teaches proper technical muscle memory and builds the right power muscles.   I think you might like this. Go to www.propds.com and see for your self.
