Hayden for sure. He is an outstanding player. Hussey and others are also good but not as good as Hayden.

Hussey is new so I believe that it is too early to just assume he is the best australian batsman...and he isn't. Mathew Hayden is, he has performed time and again.

Yea, I guess you're right but Hayden is still here and well. Hayden scored 4 consecutive centuries ( I read on cricinfo) in the West Indies/Australia test series that just passed. That's outstanding.

Hussey is a very good batter and has some time so he will hopefully do something special for Australia.

He is also a god ODI player. But his extremely amazing average says a bit too much about him. He has a lot of not outs so that boosts his average a lot. He is still a good batsman.

my votes for Hussey ,, 19 matches this year in ODI and averaging about 123 runs is very very good by any stds .. So he is not only best batsman for Aussies but he is currently best ODI batsman in World.

Even in tests he is avraging about 120 in 3 tests which is also the best test average this year , I mean Year 2005.

Atleast for the Year 2005 the best batsman award for both Tests and ODI should go to "Mike Hussey"

"I go by present and present says - Sachin IS the BEST , Shewag is going to be the next best and Dhoni's is gonna rock the world with his brutal assaults - GOD help the rest of the world"

The reason why Hussey has such an extremely high ODI average is because he has so many not outs which give his average a big boost. He is also a good player but he has a lot of not outs.

In tests, he has an average of 120 because it was against West Indies and there was one or 2 not out/s. WI don't have a single really exceptionnel bowler which made it easy for Hussey to come in and get himself a great start.

No doubt that Hussey is a good player but he is not the best Australian batsman today, Hayden is.

I agree with you.

Mike Hussey has performed well in ODIs and Tests. In ODIs, some of his good tons may have come against good teams, but he has a lot of not outs which boost his average a lot.

In tests, all his runs have come agaisnt WI. WI may be a premier division team but they are a degrading and horrible team.

Don't you think that Hayden has been performing better than Ponting lately. Hayden scored 4 centuries in 4 consecutive matches. That is consistency and performance.

Hayden has scored 4 consecutive centuries... but look beyond that... his record has been pathetic over the last 14 months... Ponting is Australia's Best Bat... Hussey is yet to prove himself against better teams...

Yea, that's true. Hussey has only played against WI so there is no telling if he really is a great batsman.

Ponting is the best Aussie batsman.

ponting is the best... and just turning 31... hayden has at most 2 good years left, while ponting can easily go on for another 6 years... on current form, he'll shatter all batting records (most runs & centuries in tests & odis)... beware sachin!  just look at the amount of cricket the aussies are playing of late... about 15 tests and 30 odis every year... while india/sachin have been averaging 6 tests the last couple of years, and maybe about 20-25 odis...

sachin (125 tests in 16 years) v/s ponting (97 in 10)...  ponting could play 200 tests by the time he gets done...

though kallis could easily overtake him (since kallis is a year younger).

but going back to the discussion, ponting easily the best!

Great points there but I think you're right but you are over-exaggerating a bit too much by saying Ponting will break all batting records.

Yea, really? How do I exaggerate over Inzy? He is the best batsman today, no doubt about it. He has been performing consistently.

I know it was a joke and I didn't get serious or anything.

Ponting is the best Australian batsman today.

Easily Ponting at the moment. He is simply stunning. Second time in two years that he has been the world's leading test run scorer, and while he plays more cricket than Kallis or Lara, old Ponting knows how to rack 'em up at a great average. He is one of the best, Ponting, much as I dislike him.
JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

Hussey is brilliant. All of the Aust line-up are immensly talented, skilled, athletic and well disciplined.

Australia have many batsmen who would get into any other side in the world but ant get into Aussie side, i.e. Lehmann, Maher, Thornly, Blewett, Elliot, Cosgrove, Martyn, Love, North, Katich and sadly Sturt Law, who missed out only 1 test now plays county(too old now).

2 of those centuries were in England and the World XI match

3 of those players have had excellent recent records

  • Ponting - 1500+ runs in a calender year, 3rd on the all time list behind No 2 Gavaskar and No 1 Viv Richards
  • Hayden - 4 centuries in row
  • Hussey - 3 centuries in 5 matches

I agree with you that Ponting, Hayden, and Hussey have all been outstanding this year. But Inzamam would have the most runs in both ODIs and Tests this year if he had played as many innings as Ponting. Inzamam would probably have scored 7 centuries if he had played 26 innings like Ponting this year.
