The reality is that developing speed takes time. It comes down to horsepower and the nervous system. Every bowler is built differently and genetics play a huge role in how fast you will be able to bowl. Mechanics play a vital role so getting your action right will make a huge difference. Everyone can bowl faster with the right attitude and training methods. You need to work on lower body strength and lower body power through single leg strength exercises and power work. Single leg training just makes sense to me. Bowling requires running in, jumping and landing at the crease and for the most part one foot is in contact with the ground while the other is not. So why would we not train this way? I incorporate single leg training into all my strength sessions, plyometrics and even medicine ball power work. Core strength and stability is also very important. As a bowler you want to be able to control the force generated from the lower body up into the upper extremities where the ball is released without "leaking" energy. Having a strong core will prevent lateral flexion and extension which will prevent injury. To bowl faster you also need good hip and thoracic spine mobility to create disassociation between the hips and shoulders to create a good stretch reflex which is required to generate that extra yard of pace so incorporation drills to improve mobility is essential. You also want to have good pulling strength so lots of rowing type exercises and chin ups.

Hi mate,
to increase your pace is one thing but you need to watch yourself because you might get injured. Some core strengthening would really help your pace aswell as save your back. Squats will get your legs stronger while rotator cuff strength training will strengthen your shoulders. To bowl quicker from there you need a fast enough run up: not too long, and really hit the crease and drive your right leg through after the delivery stride. and a good follow through. i would need to see your action if you wanted me to have a look. video etc. I hope this helps :) |

Well, i'm no pacer but every once in a while when me and my brother use to go to practice in the nets, I use to bowl some pace to him (so he wouldn't be accustom to just facing spin bowling all the time). Anyways, I use to deliver the ball at a decent pace. I use to do push ups everyday. The numbers increase as time went by from about 15-25. I have a biggish upper body which I reckon came from doing push ups continuously for a couple of years. Hardly ever did any weight training in my time, probably for 2 weeks then stopped but I did help me get stronger and can give you a powerful burst of energy to get pace.
More than one way but you have to naturally be born with some of it! Look at Brett Lee, age 34 and still letting them go at an electric pace.

In troubled times, being philosophical helps a great deal, it helps you to remain sane and not do any further damage.
