Please dont just vote because captain X is the best batter. Try include the Captains tactical ability (eg good field placment) into your vote.
I decided on Fleming ![]() p.s i hope i have not left any captains off. Edit: Since vaughn is out of action. you may want to make it a strauss vote ![]() 2nd edit: when i say captain i mean in the current time not like 10 years ago Edited by NZ_Fast |

I would always rate Flemming to be the best captain, becos in my opinion when you have a great team a captain has just to go through the motions and the individuals deliver mostly. But Flemming doesnt have a very gifted team hardly 2/3 world class players, but to operate with his resources and eventually challenging the best in the world speaks volumes of their skipper's ability. He is a very positive captain and he has stablished a team , and he makes it fight and thats the role of a captain!

Some people think that if the captain performs mostly in the team wins he should be the best captain , like Lara, or Inzi or recently Jaywardene, but I think captains performing from the front is not the only thing, but getting more than 100% out of the players is important! People hardly remmember Mike Brearly for his personal record but he is regarded as one of the best english captains! |

I'm not going into another rant about it, but Fleming is totally over rated as a captain.
I haven't seen every single captain in world cricket so am not qualified to comment, but the best I have seen ever is Michael Brearley and the best currently playing is Shane Warne. |

From that list i choose Fleming! He has such a great cricketing brain, he is proactive in his decisions rather then reactive like many others! Ponting has in his armery individuals who are really do not need captaining! They all know what to do etc! Newzealand have never had such waelth of talent yet fleming uses every ounce of the ability they have! He has been the best cpatin since he took over that role, many other counteries cannot boast having someone incharge without any change! They one the Champions Trophy and when the Aussies were untouched by other teams who would just crumble underneath the Aussies, Nzealand would take the fight to them and push them all they way! That for me was what a good captain does for his side!

To just try and nail the "Fleming is an amzing captain" crap, here are some quotations I made in the last thread we had on this subject -

spot on as usual clobbs!!!! Not only that but fleming has failed to produce the batting that we know he is capable on a regular basis. Part of being a good captain is leading from the front in your chosen part of the team, be it batting or bowling, which in flemings case is batting, and he hasn't led from the front near enough!!! While warne isn't the captain of the Aust cricket team, and it's likely he never will be, he is still tactically a better than ponting, which is why ponting and warne confer so much. If it wasn't for his turbulent (to put it mildly) personal life he would be Aust. captain. Ponting is improving though, and since the ashes he has lead from the front with his batting like no other (his fielding hasn't exactly let him down either, with a few crucial catches/run-outs!!!) His tactical nause can only get better, and he is showing no signs of a form drop, so he is arguably the best. But as it is so often said in the "best such n such" threads, it's all down to personal opinion. |

I voted Prosper Utseya his record as captain is 3-2 leads the inexpierienced Zimbabwe by example his spin his difficult to play sort of into that mould of Daniel Vettori where you can only find 3-4 singles an over off him, takes his share of wickets these days and a great fielder who also took a marvellous catch against Bangladesh. Not bad with the bat while his field placements are centimeter perfect.I think he'll turn out like a Stephen Fleming great leadership skills yet his team cant perform though as Clobber pointed out New Zealand have enough world class players to beat a top team away from home, where as Zimbabwe really there is not one world class player atleast they can all play better then average. Another great captain is Steve Tikolo |

My best I've seen is Vaughan. How good a captain is doesn't mean how good he can bat or field. I am sure when they give you captaincy they don't say well.... chanderpaul your average is 45.... here is the captaincy , no... It doesn't work that way. They gave it to those who have the brains and are tactical in which vaughan is. Vaughany , never afraid to set an unorthodox field and knows who to gave the ball to. Ponting field placing ain't no way as good as waugh or vaughan. I won't say much about fleming cause I hardly ever see him play. I think clobber is being too critical about him though. Even clobber's greatest captian said fleming is the best captain at present !! |

I think its Graeme Smith. He has brought South Africa from a low position to such a high position. Although he has the stars the team was still bad at one point so he has pulled them up very, nicely winning many matches, beating the great Aussies,etc... So according to me Smith is the best captain going around right now.

What I have seen of Jayawardane has impressed me. He won 3 ODIs on trot without Murali. And tactical desicions were also amazing. He owns one of the weaker bowling and batting line ups, but probaly one of the best fielding out fits. So he uses all his resources to maximum extent.

i voted for vaughan. and i meen for vaughan NOT strauss. the way vaughan conducted the fielding placements and bowling changes to deal with batsmens weaknesses in the ashes and also before hand i think he is better than any other captain on the intenational circuit. he is a loss to england, batting well or not. i think that was more to do with behind the scenes, so the players already knew the plans, vaughan simply helped them along the way! |

Vaughan for sure. He wasn't afraid to set an unorthodox field and it mostly cames out successful. He knows which bowler to throw the ball too when faces diffeent batsman. I really admire the attacking field he sets because I believe that attacking will win u matches. No matter what he always has in 1 or 2 slips even though batsman was blast the ball all over the field. He has a great game plans, when Gilchrist, hayden, Katich was batting he mostly had in 3 slips because of the problems that the English bowlers give to the left handers. |

Whatever we have seen of younis khan, has shown us he has all what it takes to be a good captain, so may be bracketed in warne's catagory as the best potential captain!
