After last night's thoroughly awful performance by England
I was wondering who you feel had bad world cups. Don't post about
countries , but individuals who've been a let down.
Michael Vaughan is top of my tree , every innings was dreadful to watch and in the field he was only marginally better! His captaincy didn't lift the side either - totally inept month's work by the captain. Flintoff's batting was abject too . A forty-odd against mighty Ireland being his only score of any magnitude , the rest was dismal. No apparent appetite for the fight with willow in hand , he didn't impose himself at all and I expected him to get out off almost every ball. Ntini looked one dimensional (which he probably has always been!) and had no idea of how to bowl on slow pitches - he'll never be a great and might battle to regain his place in this tournament. Tendulkar didn't cut it either , along with Lara , two of the game's greatest just didn't fire - most disappointing. That's scratching the surface , let's hear who have failed in your eyes. I think Chris Gayle has surprised me the most. He was in good form before the cup but just hasnt fired at home this tournament. I really was expecting big things from him and i feel that he has been the biggest let down for me as an idividual.(so far)

Can't say I've been too impressed with Sangakkara's batting in this competition.

I must say though Sledge that Vaughan has been absolutely atrocious this tournament, averaging 16 at a strike rate of 50. In comparison Gayle is averaging 21 at a strike rate of 72. Equally as disappointing but Gayle just gets there quicker!

Three half centuries (Bermuda , Bangladesh and NZ) is as good as he's
been Mojo - certainly not up to the standard we'd expect for such a
talent.
Then again , he's been a lot better than Lara and Gayle , to name but two! |

Yes Tonksy , Vaughan had no fluidity at all and zero confidence. He had the temerity to say that the plan yesterday was to take it easy for 10 overs and then to try and get 220-240..................... ..........SA got to 100 in the 12th over - need I say any more? |

Vaughan was really bad but Flintoff isn't far behind him in my opinion. I here he hasn't learnt from last time and is out on the fizzy pop again. Perhaps he needs a break from the game. At the moment he sould be picked as a bowler as he's clearly forgot how to bat.

Chris Gayle has easily been the biggest letdown - playing in a home tournament both his batting and bowling have been really really poor and worse still he looks like he doesn't really care. (Yes I know he always looks like that but this time I think he really really means it!)

Vaughan has been the worst letdown by far in the World Cup, he just hasn't turned up at all, without a 50 all tournament, and his scoring rate has been poor too, no wonder England can't get over 300. Also virtually the whole West Indies team have been letdowns, they have been just like England in many respects in this tournament, they haven't had the determination or the focus to do well, especially in the Super 8's, Gayle and Lara have been bad to say the least.
Amongst others the likes of Sachin, Dhoni and Inzi have had poor tournaments, Flintoff has been fairly mediocre with the bat but has at least shone with the ball, although he did at least take the attack to the Bangladeshi bowlers last week, unlike the rest of them.
Other poor performers include Ntini, Pollock and I've been disappointed by Shahriar Nafees, only averaging 5.16 in 6 innings with a highest score of 12 at a strike rate of 40.78.

The last time England got 300 in an ODI was against Sri Lanka at Headingley on a batting pitch which was a beauty, and Sri Lanka chased it down inside 40 overs.

Back on topic !! Inzamam was pretty awful too , wasn't he?
I can't recall a single decent knock by the big fella in the tournament
and his captaincy was less than dynamic!

How can anyone be let down by vaughn? it's not as though he is a top line 1 day batsman. I know we said no team's, but windies as a whole, jeepers, if you're ever going to fire up for a competition, this was it.

Collymore performed admirably , but without support 143. I agree
though , the side just haven't done enough. Maybe the empty stands
deflated them , they probably expected pulsating crowds and lots of
noise and ended up with neither.
Depressing , that. |

I think Hussey can be added to that list as well. His knock against Ireland hardly counts in the greater scheme of things.
Ntini hasn't exactly been a letdown to be. He's just been exposed as the kind of bowler he truly is. If he's not on a lively pitch, he really doesn't have much to offer. Hell, he doesn't even have a slower ball. Pollock at least has been adapting and is bowling beautifully now. |

Hussey's not had many opportunities Hed - having a dash at the
death often leads to a batsmen's demise. I'd give him credit for being
the perfect team man and don't be surprised if he comes to the party if
Australia struggle later in the tournament.

Yeah but players like Klusener and Bevan thrived in those circumstances and it was only a couple of weeks ago half this board was raving about Hussey being better than both.
Just a thought... |

Ross Taylor.
Explanation: He has been injured for most of tournament however his performances have lacked when ever he was playing. The reason i'm saying he is a WC failure is because he hasn't lived up to the hype he created beforehand.
Future: Next WC will be his. Four more years of international cricket will turn him into an absolute superstar.

I know this was only a couple of knocks but this is a guy who was averaging in the 80's not that long ago and now averages in the 50's. I certainly wouldnt class him as a failure but we did expect a bit more from him and hopefuly he comes good in the Semi's/Final if he is required to.

Is it fair to say that Gilchrist hasn't done the business or has
he just been overshadowed by Hayden? His keeping has been out of
the top drawer , but the demolition of opening bowlers just hasn't
happened as we might have expected.

At this point Bevan is better, however give Hussey a few years. He has the potential to be one of the greatest one-day batsman ever.

I didn't say I thought Hussey was a bad player. I just said I felt he'd been a bit of a disappointment in the tournament, as the topic of this thread suggests. I'm sure you can dig up that other thread regarding best finishers and carry on this tired old discussion there...

No I agree, your right. Which brings me to my point.....
Do you think a player, such as Hussey, needs to perform in theew discussion: big time to be proven as an excellent player? Even though he has perfomed consistently for a couple of years now?

I think he's done enough since he started his international career to prove that he's a fantastic player. By that same token I also believe he has to maintain it for at least another couple of years before he can be considered great.
And to round off a rather opinionated post, by saying Hussey is better than Bevan and Klusener was nowhere near either of them, 143no has proven once and for all that it is impossible to form an accurate, unbiased opinion with one's head so firmly lodged in one's arse. |
