My first memory comes from WC 1992.SA returned from isolation, for their first ever WC match. Aus was the host of that WC, and they came of a lost in the opening match vs New Zealand. Aus won the toss and elected to bat, on what seem to be a belter of a wicket. First bowl of the Aus innings, Alan Donald bowled a pearl and Geoff Marsh nicked it to Dave Richardson, unfortunately for SA it was giving not out. Boon and Marsh then took it to the SA bowlers, but they soon fell to McMillan and Kuiper. When Allan Border was bowled first ball by Kuiper, a superb away swinger, the Aussies was in some trouble. In the end they could only manage 171/9 after 50 overs. SA came in to bat , and Hudson and Wessels made a solid start. Hudson was caught and bowled by Peter Taylor for 28, when Peter Kirsten joined Wessels. They took the game away from Aus with a unbeaten partnership. SA winning the game by 9 wickets. Wessels 81 not out and Kirsten 49 not out. This was a historic occasion for World Cricket and South - Africa.

I remember that, and I remember just before the start of the game, one of the Aussie players (Steve Waugh, I think) mentioned, and I quote "South Africa is nothing but a 3rd world country, with 3rd rate players." They sure made him eat those words...
Edit: Sorry, my mistake... It was an Aussie fan arriving at the stadium who said that, not an Aussie player. I just remember that he looked alot like Steve Waugh. Edited by Mojo - 23 February 2007 at 9:56am |

In fact, that 1992 World Cup had lots of memories for South Africans... Remember Jonty Rhodes running out Inzamam ul Haq by diving into the stumps? Remember the controversial semi final against England, interrupted by rain? First SA needed 22 runs off 19 balls. Later it was ammended to 22 runs of 7 balls, and finally they were asked to make 22 runs off 1 ball. Where were Duckworth and Lewis back then?

The first World Cup I saw was in 1979. I have to admit I can't remember anything about the lead-in but the final itself is still vivid as England, without the injured Bob Willis, initially did well to claim early West Indian wickets, only to suffer a typical assault at the hands of Viv Richards, then a whirlwind from Collis King.
After King departed Richards then upped the ante. At one stage he smashed a drive head high back past the bowler Mike Hendrick who simply ducked, as Richie Benaud sagely remarked "Very wise....no point being a hero at this stage". Chasing 287 Boycott and Brearly were solid but always dropping further and further behind the run rate - to the extent that when Clive Lloyd dropped an absolute dolly from Boycott there are those who think he did it on purpose! Briefly during a frenetic partnership between Gooch and Randall did England keep up with the rate but after they went Joel Garner ruthlessly yorked out the rest with a spell of 5 for 4. |

Last world cup I think it was.....when west indies were playing against sri lanka and it was one of those knock out games.....Sarwan got injured while batting and had to leave the field. The windies were not a in a good position so he eventually came back on to bat and he was trying so hard to win the match for the west indies...however, we ended up losing and we were knocked out of the world cup!!! This was one of those "lowlights" as the starter of this thread put it.

The funny thing about King's innings is that he took a drink of Alcohol - can't remember what specifically - before he went to bat. He kept it secret for 20 something years. I don't know if y'all knew about it but that's what I read somewhere recently. |

I am sure that he is not the only cricketer that bent the "alcohol" rule. Know anymore incidents where cricketers drank alcohol before playing matches???

Probably my favourite is the tied semi of 1999. Another one a minnows point of view is Jon Davisons fanastic century and JB Burger the first Namibian to score a 50 smashing England around and had Namibia in a good position until he was dismissed.

The 99 semi final. It was a terrific piece of Australian sporting history and we must thank Allan Donald and Lance Kluesner for giving us this great memory! Im my opinion, it was the best ODI that i have ever seen.

My highlight was 'that' akhtar delivery, since it was the only single thing i actually saw live on tv. Anything else i saw was replays or highlights

1996 world cup quarter-final India Vs Pakistan in Bangalore. Aamir Sohail smashed Venkatesh Prasad to the cover boundary and then gestured to him, pointed his bat towards the covers and then wagged his finger at him. I was 13 and mad as hell.
Next ball, Prasad came in and took Sohail's off-stump out of the ground. It was a classic comeback!!!
