Topic: Zimbabwe in South Africa Posted: 03 October 2010 at 1:13pm |
A short series of 2 T20's and 3 ODI's between the two African nations. We have already spoken about Grant Flower making a shock return to international cricket in this series and it'll be interesting to see how he goes. South AFrica are full strength too and will be using this series as a warm up for the tougher games ahead.

If Zimbabwe can keep down De Villers who is a very good player of spin, then they have a chance of upsetting the proteas with their heavy spin attack.
Zimbabwe however, even if they contain SA, they still have to put up with Dale Steyn, which is already a stiff task even for the much more quality players. They need to play out Steyn, try not to give him wickets, let him walk away with 10 overs for 20 runs and try take it out on the rest.

No Spinny certainly can't see Zimbabwe winning the series but they can give the proteas some fight, May be they can win a game among the 5 matches that will be played across two formats and that will be a plus. I hope they win two, a T20 and an ODI, that would be great!

Sammy boy, my definition of a Zimbabwe upset is them just managing to win one game throughout both formats!! Series win is beyond anybody's wildest imagination me think. he he

... but surely they are expected to perform better Spinny, certainly the best ZIM side this since 2003.

This upcoming series has generated so little comment amongst locals - I've no problem that CT didn't get a match as I wouldn't have gone anyway!

I've never found Zimbabwe that bad to watch in ODI cricket to be honest. Australia is really the only team that has creamed them (Zim have only ever beat Australia in one ODI, which was actually the first game between the 2 sides). They put up a good fight and they have interesting players, worth watching. I have seen them once live, against WI at the WACA in 2001. Lara made a nice 70 odd.

Yes, Zimbabwe until 2003 were always an interesting side to watch... true they have beaten AUS only once, but one game in the World Series, I think in 2000 or 2001 ZIM lost by one run chasing 304 or something is a game I will always remember. around 16 runs were required off the last over when Douglas Marillier hit McGrath for two fours playing the "marillier shot" (now known as the Dil Scoop) it was just amazing to watch... i hope we see the same Zimbabwean side very very soon, it will be great for cricket!

Yup I remember that game, was in 2001, same series I saw them play WI. Australia won every test (all 5 against WI) and every ODI (Against Zim and WI) that summer. When Zimbabwe chased down 300 and lost by 1 run it was a great effort.

1st game today with Smith back in the ranks - I'd love to see Botha having him at third man and having a left/right batting combination scoring a single off every ball of an over - all that running between deliveries - brilliant!

I reckon he will be in the slips - Botha wouldn't want to be running in the longer formats of the game himself either.

What a tough task for Botha on his captaincy debut, Zimbabwe are 168 for 4 in 20 overs

ZIM have done wonderfully well here, 168/4 in 20 overs with Mazakadza scoring 72 and Chibhabha a fine 52. this guy Charles Coventry is a terrific striker of the ball, In the recent T20 series against India some of the shots that he played were magnificent. He should be batting a bit higher in T20's he was wasted today.

South Africa still too good though as Zimbabwe's bowlers failed to back up their batsmen, although Smith and Bosman were impressive at the top of the order.

one hell of an effort by Zimbabwe but they fall short by 8 runs. Half centuries from Taylor and Chibhabha and a late charge by Chigumbura but their bowlers have let them down once again. Zimbabwe need good pace bowlers that is the key, otherwise this team is developing very well.
Good to see JP Duminy back in form an excellent 96 and it was he who really made it possible today for South Africa.
If ZIM can play like this then the ODI series should be exciting. ZIM are a better ODI side than a T20 side, I believe.

Good signs this by the Zimbabweans! Nonetheless though, think it's more heart breaking to lose by 9 runs than 30.

Surely not Spin, personally I would feel we gave it a real good shot and with a bit more practice we would beat the opposition next time around!

ZIM going down here but not before a fine century by Brendon Taylor and he is still unbeaten on 105*. Thier bowlers have once again let them down though allowing RSA to score 351.
Century on debut for Colin Ingram, I haven't seen him before and would like to see how he goes against PAK and IND later in the year. Also scoring a fine century is Hashim Amla, perhaps the most underrated cricketer in the world, hashim averages over 45 in tests with 10 centuries and his ODI average is over 54 with 4 centuries. A fantastic find for RSA. I think also a contender to lead the team (along with AB Devillers) after Smith steps down from captaincy post WC 2011 (as he has announced)

Amla has been in terrific form for SA. In the West Indies in the ODI's, he was so free flowing, somewhat like Mohammad Yousuf!! He somehow struggled in the tests, Shillingford had him in trouble. Maybe he's suspect to debutant off spinners.

Amla's playing well and de Villiers played the Zimbabwean attack with disdain - but who wouldn't ? The Zimbos have batted pretty well , but without Steyn and Kallis this is a 2nd string outfit. The response by the locals has been tepid at best - I don't enjoy these mismatches!

Good to see Zimbabwe putting up decent totals but they're leaking too much runs.
Amla and De Villers are scoring ODI runs for fun now!

ZIM finally got crushed in the last ODI. So a winless tour for them but some positives to take. It is clear now that Brendon Taylor is "The Man" for Zimbabwe and Taibu needs to share the responsibility. They also have a very talented player in Chibhabha. Pace bowling remains very very weak. I think at the moment Blignaut can make it into the team on his bowling credentials alone, he can't do worse!
A very quite comeback for Grant Flower, this was ZIM's last scheduled ODI before the WC, although there is a possibility of a series against BAN, I believe.

Bowlers took a big beating. Taibu should have bowled Cremer more, no better time to get on a leggie than when batsmen are going guns blazing - that's why they have all those toys in their armoury.
