Afghanistan launched a fightback on day two of their ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland, closing the day on 263 for three in reply to Ireland's 405 all out in Dambulla.
Anchoring their strong reply is Shabir Noori, unbeaten on 44 in 153 balls having come in when Gary Kidd bowled Karim Sidiq for 19. Noor Ali stroked 53 and captain Nowroz Mangal 84 in 114 balls before Samiullah Shenwari completed a day to remember by thumping an unbeaten 60 in just 62 balls.
Shenwari had finished off the Ireland innings with four for 75, dismissing Trent Johnston in the morning session as fast bowler Hamid Hasan picked up three for 91 by having Kidd caught by wicket-keeper Mohammad Shahzad.
Ireland progressed in the morning thanks to an unbeaten 58 from John Mooney and 43 from Andrew White.
Meanwhile, on day three in Sharjah in the Intercontinental Shield, the United Arab Emirates closed on 102 for two in their second innings against Uganda, 90 ahead after Uganda took a first-innings lead by scoring 373 in reply to UAE's 361.
Top scorer for the Africans was Laurence Sematimba, who made 89 as Amjad Javed took four wickets and at stumps, Arshad Ali was unbeaten on 59 for UAE.
