Albie Morkel has been ruled out of the second Test against England, which begins on Thursday at Headingley, with an ankle injury. He was unlikely to come into contention for selection in any event as South Africa will be loath to change their team from the one that won so convincingly at The Oval. Fellow all-rounder Faf du Plessis has been called up as cover.
Du Plessis recently captained South Africa A to victory in a tri-series in Zimbabwe, which also involved Sri Lanka, and has improved both his batting and leg-spin bowling in recent times. If he is not required for selection for the second Test, as seems likely, then he will again captain the ‘A’ side in a series against Ireland which starts next week.
Morkel, meanwhile, is expected to be fit for the third Test should he be needed, and is in good form, having played for Somerset in the Friends Life t20, and having scored a half-century for the South Africans in their two-day match against Worcestershire last week.
South Africa second Test squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers (wicket-keeper), Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn, Thami Tsolekile (wicket-keeper), Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
