Kent 210 v
South Africans 108-2 (Amla 36no)
Tour Match, Canterbury, day two

Play was abandoned for the day shortly after lunch on the second day of the South Africans’ final warm-up match ahead of the first Test. The tourists faced 22 overs and progressed from their overnight 31 for one to 108 for two.

Kent’ seamers all bowled tidily and found at times extravagant movement in what were helpful bowling conditions. Alviro Petersen was the only batsmen to be dismissed, trapped in front by the impressive Simon Cook for 21.

However, Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis saw things through until lunch without further mishap. The heavens then opened to top up an already high water table and the decision was taken by umpires Jeff Evans and Trevor Jesty to abandon play for the day.

The tourists will reflect on the day as useful batting practice ahead of Thursday, but will want more tomorrow when the forecast is for slightly drier weather. Kent’s second-string seam attack, meanwhile, will be content with the way they bowled in the conditions, with only Matt Coles enduring a slightly disappointing day, conceding 37 runs from his seven overs.
