Andrew Hall is to replace compatriot Nicky Boje as Northamptonshire captain after the club revealed that left-arm spinner Boje had decided to stand down with immediate effect.

Boje, 37, explained in a statement: "It is after much thought and consideration I have decided to step down as Captain. I feel it is in the best interest of the team and it is vital that my own contribution as a performer is maximized for the remainder of the season.”

“I have really enjoyed the experience of captaining the team for the past two years and I’m proud with the progress that has been achieved during that period.”

“I am now looking forward to the remainder of the season and making my contribution as a player to the brand of positive, entertaining and exciting cricket ahead.”

Northamptonshire have suffered a poor start to the 2010 season, winning two of five LV= County Championship games and losing all three of their Clydesdale Bank 40 matches.

Boje joined Northamptonshire in 2007, and has to date scored 1883 first-class runs, 644 one-day runs and 249 Twenty20 runs while taking 144 wickets in all competitions.

He led Northamptonshire to Finals Day of the Twenty20 Cup last season and they missed out on promotion to the top division of the Championship by just one point in 2009.

Irish wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien has been appointed as vice-captain.
