Explosive Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag will miss the ongoing One Day International series against Sri Lanka with an ankle injury.

Sehwag did not play in the first match, which Sri Lanka won comfortably by eight wickets, and his condition is such that he will not be able to recover in time to help his side fight back.

He twisted his ankle in training before the first match in Dambulla and will now return home although no decision over a replacement has yet been made.

In his and Sachin Tendulkar's absence (with an elbow injury) in the first match, Gautam Gambhir opened alongside debutant Virat Kohli.

"He was a batsman in top form but that's the way it goes in cricket," Dhoni told reporters.

Sehwag was India's top scorer in the Test series, scoring an unbeaten 201 in the second Test in Galle to set up a win.
