Sri Lanka 66-1 (Zaheer Khan 1-14)
Scorecard
Second Test, Kanpur, day two
After bowling India out for 642, Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan to the first ball of their reply before closing day two of the second Test on 66 for one.
Rahul Dravid scored 144 to become the third centurion in the Indian innings after Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag had passed three figures on day one as India piled on the runs with VVS Laxman (63) and Yuvraj Singh (67) also scoring half-centuries.
Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath picked up five for 121, bowling Mahendra Singh Dhoni (4) and Harbhajan Singh (5) with arm balls, and effected the run out of Dravid while fellow spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis picked up two apiece.
The run out of Dravid was more accurately a dropped chance as a firmly-struck drive from Laxman bounced out of bowler Herath's hands and deflected onto the stumps at the non-strikers end, leaving Dravid short of his ground although he had at least by then moved into fourth place in the all-time run-scorers list, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting.
Dilshan, who hit a century in Ahmedabad, failed to negotiate the first ball of the innings when he looped a catch to debutant Pragyan Ojha as he tried to flick Zaheer Khan through the leg-side.
However, Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara guided Sri Lanka through testing spells, first from pacers Zaheer and Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and then spinners Singh and Ojha, who both had some very close lbw appeals turned down.
Both men were unbeaten on 30 at stumps.
The opening Test in Ahmedabad was drawn with seven centurions in the game.
