Brett Lee has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test which begins tomorrow at Lord's while Kevin Pietersen has been passed fit.

Lee has not recovered sufficiently from the rib injury that ruled him out of the opening Test at Cardiff and captain Ricky Ponting confirmed that he would not be taking his place in the starting line-up.

Ponting said he hopes that his premier fast bowler will be fit enough to return to action for the tour game against Northamptonshire which follows the second Test and the third Test which begins on 30th July at Edgbaston.

Meanwhile, the England & Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that Pietersen is fit to play following a cortisone injection in his troublesome Achilles tendon.

Pietersen has now had his second such injection in the area which means he will have to nurse the injury through the remainder of the five-Test series.

The series remains level at 0-0 after England held on to escape with a draw in Cardiff.
