ECB today announced the launch of the Ashes School Challenge - a free interactive educational programme which will be aimed at Primary schools nationwide ahead of this summer’s Investec Ashes Test Series.
The programme, which is also being supported by Chance to Shine and Cricket Australia, is designed to educate children about the Spirit of Cricket and create a legacy for grassroots cricket in England and Australia.
Closely linked to the National Curriculum in each country, the project will be based around 20 Ashes themed lesson plans and activities covering a variety of key learning areas such as numeracy, literacy, geography, history, PE, media studies, art and technology.
Selected schools in the UK will also be invited to take part in a Sister School Challenge where schools can build on the classroom learning by developing a partnership with a school in Australia to study a chosen theme from the wider programme.
ECB Managing Director – Cricket Partnerships Mike Gatting said: “There are so many ways in which the Ashes can play a part in the classroom – whether by applying maths skills to the study of scores and averages, understanding how modern cricketers keep fit and healthy, or learning more about cricket’s place in the history and culture of both countries
“We’ll also be encouraging participating schools to organise Ashes-themed cricket tournaments or fun days as part of the programme which will involve the wider community and give children an opportunity to play the game and learn more about key cricketing values such as teamwork, fair play, respect and leadership.”
A comprehensive and wide-ranging educational resource kit which will include a DVD is available free to all schools and teachers interested in taking part in the project.
