Australia Off To Flyer As Siddle Takes Hat-Trick
England 260 (Bell 76, Cook 67, Siddle 6-54) v
First Ashes Test, Brisbane, day one
Peter Siddle took a hat-trick and returned figures of six for 54 as Australia dismissed England for 260 on the opening day of the Ashes series in Brisbane.
Australia then closed on 25 without loss as they began making up the deficit following an enthralling opening day's action at the Gabba.
England won the toss but lost a wicket inside the first over when captain Andrew Strauss was caught by Michael Hussey off Ben Hilfenhaus and despite half-centuries from Alastair Cook (67) and Ian Bell (76), Siddle was on top form and he ripped through England's batting.
His hat-trick came when he dismissed Cook, Matthew Prior and Stuart Broad with consecutive deliveies and he also snapped up the wickets of Kevin Pietersen (43), Paul Collingwood (4) and Graeme Swann (10).
Debutant left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty returned two for 41 by dismissing Bell and James Anderson (11).
In reply, openers Shane Watson and Simon Katich were unbeaten on nine and 15 respectively.
