Australia pace bowler Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the upcoming Boxing Day Test against England in Melbourne after failing to recover from a bruised heel.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury in the third Test in Perth and underwent scans after the game. Even though the results cleared him of a serious damage but he still feels discomfort on his heel and has been replaced by Jackson Bird for the encounter.

Starc's presence will surely be missed by the home side as he is already at the top of the list in the leading wicket-takers in the series with 19 scalps.

Bird last played a Test for Australia in December last year but the 31-year-old remained confident of performing well.

"It would be unbelievable to play an Ashes Test on Boxing Day. I'll be ready and preparing as I normally would for any Test match."

After already winning the series 3-0, Australia will aim to whitewash England with a 5-0 margin which will be their second in two home Ashes contest.
