England XI 212-7 (Ballance 55) v
CA Chairman's XI 16-0
Tour game, Alice Springs, day one
Gary Ballance scored a half-century but England were less than impressive on the opening day of their two-day tour game against a Cricket Australia Chairman's XI in Alice Springs.
Ballance made 55 but was the only player to capitalise on a start as England closed on 212 for seven before the CA XI closed on 16 without loss.
England opened with Michael Carberry (6) and Joe Root (30) and played Ballance, who hit 55 in 134 balls with five fours, at number three.
Ben Stokes, another contender to come into the side as England face the rest of the Ashes series without Jonathan Trott, batted at five and made 28 in 54 balls.
Matthew Prior, captaining the side made 19 at number four, Ian Bell made 13, Jonny Bairstow was unbeaten on 31 and Graeme Swann struck 29 before England chose to declare.
Simon Mackin took two wickets for the CA XI with Josh Lalor, Jayde Herrick, Alexander Keith and James Muirhead grabbed one apiece.
In the 10 overs that the CA XI faced from Boyd Rankin (0-2), Steven Finn (0-10) and Swann (0-3), England were unable to make a breakthrough.
Steve Cazzulino was unbeaten on five and Marcus Harris made 10.
