Bangladesh and West Indies Suffer Injury Setbacks Ahead of ODIs

Bangladesh and West Indies have both suffered injury setbacks ahead of the forthcoming limited-overs matches in Khulna and Mirpur.

Tino Best has been ruled out of both the five-match One-Day International series and the one-off Twenty20 International as a result of the hamstring injury that he picked up during the second Test, while Shakib Al Hasan will miss at least the first two matches in the ODI series after being diagnosed with a stress fracture of his right tibia.

Shakib’s injury also occurred during the second Test and is likely to be linked to his huge workload during the match. He bowled 52 overs in the tourists’ marathon first innings and then top-scored in Bangladesh’s second innings with 97. At the end of the fourth day, he was sent for a scan with Bangladesh’s physiotherapist, Vibhav Singh, summing up the result as follows:

“We have decided that he [Shakib Al Hasan] will miss the two ODIs in Khulna," Singh said. "We will review his scan report with an orthopaedic specialist in Dhaka to decide the best management plan for Shakib."

Chief selector Akram Khan said that a replacement player will be announced in the next day or two.

Best, meanwhile, has been diagnosed with a grade one lateral hamstring strain according to West Indies physiotherapist CJ Clark and will be out until the new year.

Clark said, “Though being able to bowl in the second innings (he took a career-best six for 40) with pain-killing injections, he [Best] will need to return home to Barbados for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. It is expected that he will be back to full fitness for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament in January."

Uncapped, 21 year-old Barbados fast-bowler Jason Holder has been named as his replacement. He has taken 11 list A wickets at an average of 21 while playing for West Indies A against Pakistan, Bangladesh and India A, and has an overall first-class career record that reads 47 wickets at 20.85. 

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said of Holder’s elevation to the senior team: “The selectors have started this policy of looking at giving some of our young players an opportunity at international level to see what they can do. Jason has done very well with the A-Team, so it's a good opportunity for him to come here and get into the environment to see what it is like, and experience the work ethic required to be successful at this level."

The first of five ODIs is on Friday in Khulna.
