Scorecard

Bangladesh were brought back down to earth following their three-nil clean sweep over Ireland last week with a comprehensive Richie-Berrington-inspired defeat to Scotland at Voorburg.

Berrington became the first batsmen from an associate country to reach three figures and did the vast majority of his side’s scoring after they had won the toss and elected to bat. He and his opening partner Calum MacLeod put on 28 for the first wicket, before MacLeod fell for 19. His was to prove to be Scotland’s second highest score as Berrington dominated the scoring, especially during a fourth-wicket partnership of 64 with Preston Mommsen, who contributed just 12. Berrington reached his century – only the seventh ever in 252 T20 Internationals – off only 55 balls prior to falling in the penultimate over and Scotland closed on 162 for seven.

For Bangladesh, Mashrafe Mortaza was the pick of the bowlers, taking two for 22 to continue his good showing from last week in Stormont, and in truth 163 should have been well within range for their in-form batting line-up.

Unfortunately for them, a promising opening stand of 28 was brought to end by the run-out of Mohammad Ashraful (8) and they never really recovered. Sometime Middlesex all-rounder Josh Davey (three for 23) got the key wickets of Tamim Iqbal and Nasir Hossain, while the scalps of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim were claimed by Gordon Goudie (one for 26) and Preston Mommsen (one for 25) respectively. Majid Haq also delivered four tidy overs of off-spin and was rewarded with three wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 128 at the end of the 18th over.

The win is Scotland’s first against a Full Member of the ICC in all limited-overs international cricket and comes off the back of their win over Canada in the World Cricket League Championship earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s tour of northern Europe continues with the first of two Twenty20 Internationals in as many days against the Netherlands at the same venue tomorrow.
