Saturday 19th May saw the first ever ‘BIG Cricket Fun Day’ hit Lincoln City Centre.
At what felt like the crack of dawn, the ECB Cricket Factory were on site, along with Paula from Lincolnshire Cricket, in Lincoln city centre adjacent to the Brayford setting up their fantastic rig for the day. Shortly after, new sponsor of Lincolnshire Cricket Batting 4 6 turned up and began setting up their pop-up shop and Crazy Catch Challenge. With the banner zones in place, the site was really starting to take shape.
Around 9am, the Lincolnshire Cricket coaches for the day, Rachael Dyer, Niall Young and Neil Wheeler arrived armed with hot chocolates and bacon sandwiches to warm everyone up from the unseasonably chilly day. After a quick game of catch to get everyone in mood, we were off!
Throughout the day we had a constant flow of youngsters testing their cricketing skills; batting, bowling, throwing and catching, from experienced county players to little ones aged just 3 years old – you’re never too young to start playing! At one point a group of local Beavers from the Boy Scouts even stopped by for a go! It was great to see a number of eager boys and girls coming back time and time again to better their scores, showing off their competitive sides when it came to the speed of their bowling. Every child throughout the day walked away with a packed Lincolnshire Cricket goody bag and a smile on their face.
Batting 4 6 also attracted a lot of interest to their Crazy Catch Challenge, with a number of people proving that it was not as easy as it looked! Most of their attention came with their pop-up shop where they were offering everything cricket from bats and gloves to helmets and sunglasses – even a few amusing T-Shirts! It was a great opportunity for them to showcase themselves within Lincolnshire. If you are in need of anything cricket related, they are definitely worth getting hold of for friendly, personal and tailored advice.
In the afternoon, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Lincolnshire Coop’s Kool Kat himself! After having a go at cricket with the Cricket Factory boys and girls, he posed for photos with his many fans who flocked to see him, who of course finished off with a go playing themselves.
Despite the miserable weather on the day, we still had over 200 young people through our doors, over a quarter of which were girls which is great to see!
We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came down and had a go, and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.
Don’t forget, you can still join in with cricket in Lincolnshire by attending one of our June Half Term cricket courses! Plus we will be with the ECB Cricket Factory once again at this year’s Lincolnshire County Show, so pop along and say hello!
