Yorkshire and England Lions batsman Joe Root starred with the ball in Sheffield Collegiate's nine wicket win against Castleford in the ECB Yorkshire League. By David Markham.
Root took 8-42 with his off spinners as Castleford were bowled out for a mere 91. Collegiate reached their winning target in 20.2 overs.
Ben Coad took a hat-trick in Yorkshire Academy's six wicket home win over reigning champions York.
Coad took 6-31 in 12 overs as the leaders were bowled out for 143. Then, Jack Leaning with 44 and George Ross 40 not out ensured Academy's victory despite interruptions for rain.
Second placed Rotherham moved to within three points of the leaders with a 59-run win at home to Sheffield United.
Gerhard Rudolph and James Moorhouse gave Rotherham a great start with an opening stand of 107, Rudolph making 100, including six fours three sixes and Moorhouse 59, containing ten boundaries. Rudolph then added 77 with Jordan Lowe for the fourth wicket, Lowe remaining unbeaten on 47 as Rotherham totalled 257-5. Gurman Randhawa took 5-64 as United were replied with 198-7, opener Nick Beneke making a defiant 71.
Harrogate beat Cleethorpes by three wickets in a game reduced to 25 a side because of rain. Ben Biker (4-37) and former Yorkshire all-rounder Vic Craven (4-47) each took four wickets as Cleethorpes were restricted to 94-9. Craven led Harrogate to victory with a rapid 39, including two sixes and four fours.
Piet Rinke produced a superb all-round performance for Scarborough in an incomplete match in which both sides took three points. Rinke scored 87 and shared a sixth wicket stand of 134 with Mark Tennant, who finished unbeaten on 70 in Scarborough's total of 221-8 in their 55 overs. Driffield replied with 130-8 in 36 overs with Rinke taking 5-26.
