Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by the iconic Hilton Newcastle Gateshead continued its Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) at the stunning Durham CCC Riverside ground in Chester Le Street.

As the players are soon realizing the programme is only going to get tougher as it continues.  This week centred on the final session of phase 1 so a real Kookaburra ball trial week with the seamers taking on the opening batsmen armed with new balls.  A fairly brutal session later left the batsmen with more than just memories while 4 wickets in the first 18 balls sees the message about  ‘don’t waste it’ is really sinking in with the seamers.

For the spinners a good session looking at the various types of used matches balls they should expect in the summer and how these impacts upon the spin generated which presented evidence of why we are working so hard in the winter to develop plans to suit.  Sadly if the batsmen thought that would allow them some rest bite from Marc’s fired up seamers it did not as spinners also came armed with detailed plans to weave their expected spells under the close scrutiny of spin guru Ash Patel.  The sanctuary of the batting skills set was welcome for most where for the final time Ronny and Gordon completed sets on technique much of it was noticed to be on back foot as well as foot movement to spinners.

So that leaves just 3 sessions until Christmas.  Week 6 is the start of phase 2 where after a full debrief the players gain the chance to work on development areas while the club starts to slot players into potential summer roles….always a revealing session. In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
