Australian fast bowler Brett Lee will play no part in his side's tour of South Africa after being diagnosed with appendicitis.

Lee had been named in the squads to play two Twenty20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals but surgery will now rule him out for up two months.

"Brett complained of some abdominal pain after arriving in Cape Town on Sunday. After consulting specialists and having the relevant investigations he has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will be having surgery in Cape Town later today," Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said.

“He will obviously be ruled out of the Twenty20 and ODI series in South Africa and is likely to return to cricket in six to eight weeks.”

Cricket Australia are yet to make a decision on whether they will send a replacement player to South Africa.

The series gets underway with the first Twenty20 International on 13th October in Cape Town.

Johnson And Watson Undergo Scans In Johannesburg

All-rounders Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson have undergone scans in Johannesburg to assess the extent of injuries that they picked up during the econd and final Test against South Africa. Johnson was able to bat on despite injuring the big toe on his left foot, helping Australia take a series-levelling two-wicket win, while Watson was unable to bowl after aggravating a hamstring injury on the first day.

Ponting Stands Firm As Australia Fight Back

An unbeaten half-century from Ricky Ponting - his 57th in Test cricket - kept Australia in with a chance of winning the second and final Test against South Africa in Johannesburg. The tourists will begin the final day on 142 for three after they were set 310 runs and with Ponting not out on 54, will need a further 168 runs to claim a series-levelling victory.

Amla And De Villiers Engineer South African Recovery

Unbeaten centuries from Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers engineered a South African recovery and enabled them to close day three of the second and final Test against Australia in Johannesburg 199 runs ahead. Australia took the honours in the first session with three wickets as South Africa began their second innings but thereafter they were thwarted by an unbroken 139-run partnership between Amla and de Villiers for the fourth wicket.

Steyn And Tahir Lead South African Fightback

Australia continued the pattern set by both teams of collapsing once well-set as they were dismissed for 296 in reply to South Africa's 266 on day two of the second and final Test in Johannesburg. They were racing along at 174 without loss as openers Shane Watson and Phillip Hughes both made scores of 88 but would subsequently lose eight wickets for 103 as they gained a slender 30-run lead on first innings.

Kallis Scores 12,000th Run Before South Africa Collapse

Jacques Kallis became the fourth man to score 12,000 Test runs before South Africa lost six wickets for 25 runs in 11 overs to be dismissed for 266 on the opening day of the second and final game in Johannesburg. Kallis reached the milestone, overtaking Brian Lara on the all-time list of Test run-scorers, with an aggressive 54 n 41 balls and although AB de Villiers and Ashwell Prince also scored half-centuries, Australia hit back.
