Secretary Colonel Peter Sharland CBE confirmed today his selections for the British Army X1 taking part in the ‘Salute Our Hero’s Cricket Festival in association with Hilton Newcastle Gateshead’ starting on Monday 19th July at Richmondshire CC.

The Army X1 have announced a large squad as they take in not only a match against Derbyshire 2nd X1 at Denby on Monday but a 50 over match on Wednesday against NUSC and a full day of T20 matches on Thursday 22nd July at the wonderful Richmondshire CC in aid of ABF The Soldiers Charity.

Festival organizer John D Holland was delighted to have received the names- “The festival is the culmination of over 8 months of work and two years of pressing the Army to travel to Yorkshire.  Seeing the names brings home not only to NUSC but also to our sponsors Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, Ellwoods and Kookaburra that what we put together is going to become a wonderful festival”

Hilton Newcastle Gateshead once again provide title sponsorship to ensure the festival could be founded, while Ellwoods have arranged match umpires and for them to be presented with custom made clothing for the festival and Kookaburra have ensured the teams will be using International cricket balls in the matches.

Mr Holland also added that NUSC players will be up against a tough challenge adding “reading the Army names makes the challenge of getting the Army to Yorkshire seem to be nothing compared to playing against their cricket team”

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
