Seventeen year-old off-spinner Peter Burgoyne has signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire. For the first year he will be on a summer contract as he completes his A-Levels, while in the second year he will be playing as a full-time professional.

Burgoyne, although born across the county border in Nottingham, is a product of the county’s Academy system and has represented the club since Under-13 level as well as playing for local club side Denby. His rise continues Derbyshire’s recent policy of producing home-grown talent, something to which club chairman Chris Grant alluded to in his statement when reacting to the news.

He said, “The emergence of Peter in 2011 has added further weight to our strategy of backing home-grown cricketers. He did Derbyshire proud by shining on the international stage and it’s great that we are leading the way in terms of producing young cricketers with international potential.”

As for Burgoyne, who had a breakthrough season in 2011 – he represented England Under-19s against South Africa Under-19s as well as making his List A debut against Middlesex – the news was a culmination of many years hard work with Derbyshire coaches Karl Krikken and Howard Dytham.

He said, “It has been a great year for me and I’m delighted to end it in the knowledge that I’m on the way to becoming a professional cricketer. The Derbyshire County Cricket Club Academy has been a fantastic learning experience and it has played a huge part in my development as a player. In particular I would like to thank Karl Krikken (Head Coach) and Howard Dytham (Head of Development) for the role they have played in helping me into this position.”

Krikken himself added, “Peter is an excellent executor of skills, he plays cricket in a refreshingly fearless way and he has enjoyed an impressive season in 2011. An England Under-19 call-up was rich reward for a rapid progression in Peter’s game and he did himself and the club proud during the series against South Africa.”

County Cricket
With many of England's county cricketers now heading home from their off-season destinations in time for Christmas, we take our monthly look at how they have been performing for their franchises or states so far in the 2011-12 season.
England batsman Kevin Pietersen has extended his contract with Surrey until the end of his international career. Pietersen, who first signed for the club on a one-year deal in 2011 following a loan spell in 2010, will play for the Brown Caps until he no longer has an ECB Central Contract.
Warwickshire and England seam-bowler Chris Woakes has signed a new two-year deal with the county which will see him remain with the club until at least the end of the 2014 season.
Kent have signed former Durham all-rounder Ben Harmsion on a contract of undisclosed length ahead of the 2012 season.
Middlesex wicket-keeper Adam Rossington and Hampshire seam bowler James Tomlinson have both signed contract extensions with their respective counties. Rossington, an 18 year-old who has represented England’s Under-19 side, has extended his existing contract by one year to the end of 2013, while Tomlinson has also signed until the end of the 2013 season.
Somerset have tentatively announced that they have secured the services of South African all-rounder Vernon Philander as their overseas player for the first two months of the 2012 season. Philander's availability is dependent on him not being selected to play in the Indian Premier League.
