C&G Cheltenham Cricket Festival 2007 Launch
Gloucestershire have been playing at Cheltenham for over 135 years although it was not called a Festival until 1906. It is one of the most successful Festivals in the world and further history can be found in the cricket section on the Glos CCC website.
The Club will be playing at the Cheltenham College ground from 22nd July – 3rd August, hosting six cricket matches, including 2 four-day LV County Championship, 3 one-day NatWest Pro40 matches and a Lords Taverners’ Charity match.
The Festival sponsors, Cheltenham & Gloucester and, Glos CCC will continue to encourage the new generation of cricketers by providing the “C&G Game Zone”. This area is set aside for youngsters for playing cricket, coaching, competitions and other activities. It is definitely a favourite with the many youngsters visiting the ground.
The NatWest Pro40 match versus Warwickshire Bears on Sunday 29th July will also be the Life Members’ Day. This is an annual occasion for the life members of the Cricket Club to celebrate and we thank them for their support. Life Members’ Day includes lunch in a marquee. So please contact the membership secretary on 0117 9108017 for further details.
In addition to the cricket we will again host the “Beating of the Retreat” by the Band of the Prince of Wales’s Division on the 1st August following a successful debut at last year’s Festival. This year the band will also play during the tea interval. The main performance will start 20 minutes after close of play. Tickets for this can be purchased from the Club, however, spectators and members already in the ground will be allowed to stay to watch the Beating of the Retreat at no extra cost.
Wednesday the 1st August also hosts the annual Ladies’ Day which is the perfect way for local businesswomen to watch an afternoon of cricket whilst networking. For more information or to book a table call 0870 744 1324.
There are also plenty of fringe events at this year’s Festival to be enjoyed by all the family. These include a “taste of Gloucestershire” party on 28th July and a trip to Kim Bailey’s racing stables on 26th July. Further information on all the fringe events can be found under events on the GCCC website www.glosccc.co.uk or by contacting Kevin Touhey.
