South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris has been ruled out of the remainder of the Twenty20 series against New Zealand after sustaining a quad muscle injury during yesterday’s opening game, which South Africa won by eight wickets. Morne Morkel, who was due to join the squad after Christmas, will now link up with them ahead of tomorrow’s second game.
Proteas Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee commented on Morris’ injury: “Chris will need a recovery period of at least two to three weeks after injuring his left quad during the game; that effectively rules him out of the series. When he was bowling his fourth over he went for the effort ball, he tried to bowl a short one - that is where he aggravated the injury.
“He was always fifty-fifty coming into the series, but yesterday when he had his fitness test he passed all the clinical markers. It is one of those injuries that can happen at any time.”
Morris took two wickets in yesterday’s match, which was his debut, before leaving the field midway through his final over.
