St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 149-7 (Gayle 54) beat
Trinbago Knight Riders 110 (Cottrell 3-17) by 39 runs
Qualifier 1, Caribbean Premier League, Trinidad
After Chris Gayle scored a patient half-century, the bowlers led by Sheldon Cottrell helped St Kitts and Nevis Patriots defend a total of 150 by 39 runs against Trinbago Knight Riders to take them to the final of the Caribbean Premier League 2017 tournament.
Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and opted to bowl first. Gayle (54 not out) started the innings in an unusual style playing out a maiden over.
Evin Lewis (6) fell early at the other end but Gayle shifted gears and struck a six and a four in the fourth over while Mohammad Hafeez (21) slammed three boundaries and a maximum to take the total to 40 for one in the powerplay.
Kevon Cooper (1-12) provided the breakthrough when he removed Hafeez but Gayle added another 48 run stand with Brandon King (30). Dwayne Bravo (4-38) helped Trinbago Knight Riders to make a comeback but Gayle, who reached his fifty off the final over helped his team post 149 for seven in the 20 overs.
In the chase, Knight Riders lost three wickets in as many overs with just six runs on the board. Darren Bravo (29), Denesh Ramdin (19) and Dwayne Bravo (24) showed some resilience but the pressure was too much to handle as they were bowled out for 111 runs in 19.3 overs.
Cottrell (3-17) was the pick of the Patriots bowlers and Gayle bagged the man of the match for playing a responsible knock at the top of the innings.
