Derbyshire find themselves back at the foot of Division One of the LV= County Championship after Surrey prevailed on a tense final day at The Oval. Set 217 to win in what has been a low-scoring match, the hosts suffered an early setback as Mark Footitt and Matt Higginbottom removed an opener apiece to make it four for two.
However, Hashim Amla displayed all of his class and showed just why Surrey have signed him as they aim to avoid relegation. He made 88 and added 84 with Vikram Solanki (44) for the third-wicket and 58 with Zander de Bruyn (31) for the fourth. He then put on a further 45 with Steven Davies (18) before both fell in quick succession towards the end to David Wainwright. Surrey eventually won by four wickets to become the final side in Division One to record their maiden win of the season.
Derbyshire had earlier prolonged their second innings to 286 as David Wainwright finished on 54 not out. He took his overnight eighth-wicket stand with Tom Poynton to 93, before the wicket-keeper became the first of three wickets in as many overs for Surrey skipper Gareth Batty, who finished with figures of five for 71.
