LV County Championship Division One

Durham need two more wins to retain the Championship and they took a giant stride towards one of them by dismissing Somerset for 174 on day one of their match at The Riverside. Somerset made a good start having won the toss, Arul Suppiah (53) and Marcus Trescothick (31) putting on 89 for the first wicket before they lost their way. Former Somerset man Ian Blackwell did a lot of the damage by taking five for seven, spinning through Somerset's lower order after two wickets from Graham Onions and three from Liam Plunkett did some of the early work.

Durham closed on 110 for three, overcoming losing Michael di Venuto (22) and Will Smith (0) to consecutive Charl Willoughby deliveries to keep themselves in pole position. Shivnarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 49 and Kyle Coetzer was the other man to fall, having made 30.
