BOOKIES have never taken less money on England ahead of a one day competition and are odds on that they'll fail to reach the knockout stages.

Andrew Strauss' men narrowly avoided being whitewashed by Australia at the weekend after a four wicket victory at the Riverside.

But the change in fortunes has not persuaded patriotic punters to part with their cash and Ladbrokes have laid less than £200 on them winning the tournament.

The team are rank outsiders at 16/1 with only the West Indies behind them in the betting, and are 4/9 to go out at the group stages.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "No Pietersen, no Flintoff, no chance.

"At times like this we are usually inundated with patriotic punters wanting to back our boys but we've never seen such a lack of interest in them.

"I'm sure every English cricket fan is praying for an upturn, but they are certainly not punting on it."

England are 11/8 to finish third in their group, 21/ to finish bottom and an unlikely 7/1 to finish top.
