Paddy Power have pledged to refund all pre-match cricket bets on England today following their shock defeat to Ireland in the Cricket World Cup.

Irish eyes were certainly smiling as they pulled off what bookies have hailed as the biggest upset in England’s cricket history with the 10/1 Ireland turning over an England team who were 33/1 ON to win the match.

Paddy Power alone are paying out punters more than £80,000 after a betting plunge on the Irish who clearly fancied pulling off the shock result. At one point during the game the Irish were as big as 33/1 to win the match.

Paddy Power himself said: “In cricketing terms this was Ireland’s cup final so we’re happy to celebrate with punters by refunding losing bets – they certainly deserve it if they backed England on that performance.

“Make no mistake, at 33/1 ON this is the biggest upset in World Cup cricket and English cricket. The only people who don’t seem too surprised are celebrating Irish punters, they’ve absolutely cleaned up on their victory.”

Even though Paddy Power now takes more bets in the UK than its homeland the bookie reported they had taken twice as many pre-match bets for Ireland winning the Group B match than for England. A combination of England’s struggles against the Dutch and Ireland’s feeling of unfinished business after they had England on the ropes at the 2010 Twenty20 World Cup only for rain to ride to the rescue of the Three Lions had Ireland – and plenty of others - feeling an upset was on the cards.

England are now 10/1 to win the World Cup from 13/2 before the match. Ireland remain longshots to go all the way despite their victory today but their odds have been slashed from 1000/1 to 150/1 to win the World Cup.
