Following Ricky Ponting's ringing endorsement of Michael Clarke to succeed him as Australia’s permanent Test captain, William Hill have made the current vice-captain the 1/10 red-hot favourite to get the job. Shane Watson is the 7/1 second favourite and Brad Haddin is 10/1.

"Punter Ponting has seemingly put his money on Clarkey to succeed him," said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly on the latest cricket odds.

Another nation with captaincy issues is England, although Hills offer 1/2 that Andrew Strauss captains England in their next ODI. Should he step down, there are a number of people ready and willing to take over, with Kevin Pietersen the 4/1 favourite. Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, has heralded Stuart Broad as the successor to Strauss and he is priced at 7/1.

William Hill Odds:

Next Permanent England ODI Captain: 4/1 Kevin Pietersen; 9/2 Jonathan Trott; 9/2 Alastair Cook; 5/1 Ian Bell; 5/1 Paul Collingwood; 7/1 Stuart Broad; 7/1 Eoin Morgan; 10/1 Matt Prior; 14/1 Graeme Swann; 16/1 James Anderson

Next Australia Test Captain: 1/10 Michael Clarke; 7/1 Shane Watson; 10/1 Brad Haddin; 14/1 Michael Hussey; 20/1 Cameron White; 25/1 Tim Paine; 33/1 Simon Katich; 50/1 Mitchell Johnson
