Ricky Ponting is 8/15 to keep his job as Australian Test captain reports Paddy Power, after his team were “beaten into the earth” by the Ashes winning England team.
Despite becoming the first Australian captain to lose the Ashes three times in 120 years Ponting remains the favourite to keep his job for Australia’s next Test series against Bangladesh in April with a dearth of credible alternatives leaving the Australian selectors with a tough decision on their hands.
But should Ponting be on his way out Paddy Power offer 11/8 the Fifth Test in Sydney next week is Punter’s last Test as captain and 10/3 it’s his last ever Test in the famous Baggy Green as an Australian player.
Ponting’s nearest challenger is Michael Clarke at 6/4 although the long anointed successor may not now be the automatic replacement as many had assumed in previous years as he endures a similar run of poor form as Ponting. Other names likely to be in the running include current players Brad Haddin and Shane Watson at 7/1 whilst should Cricket Australia opt to bring in a new face Tim Paine is 9/1 and Cameron White 25/1. Shane Warne, arguably the greatest captian Australia never had is a 500/1 outsider for a sensational comeback.
Darren Haines, cricket betting spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Ricky Ponting remains the one world class player in the Australian team despite his lean spell and the lack of any other stand out candidates may mean Ponting gets to keep his job by default.”
Meanwhile England are 1/3 to win the series and 11/8 to win the fifth and final Test in Sydney in the New Year.
