Joe Root is odds-on to captain the England Test side according to Ladbrokes.

The 22-year-old might have only just played in his 10th game for the national team but he continues to impress every time, and firm are now quoting him at odds-on (5/6) to captain the England Test side during his career.

It's currently a 6/1 chance that Root's England's top runscorer during the Ashes, or for those who are confident already can take the 12/1 on offer that his heroics of the summer see him named as man of the series.

And punters have also been quick to back him to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, despite being quoted at 200/1 after last year's ceremony Root is now just a 33/1 shot to take the trophy away from Sir Bradley Wiggins.

However at 500/1 it's looking unlikely that the Sheffield lad will have a stand named after him at his beloved Bramall Lane like fellow Unitedite Jessica Ennis.

Jessica Bridge, cricket betting expert at Ladbrokes said: "Root's the natural successor to Cook as far as the odds are concerned. It's still early to speculate about BBC SPOTY but punters are already rooting for Joe to do the business this summer and in December."

England are not the favourites they were a few months back with the bookies and it is not without some reason following their somewhat uncertain start to the series against New Zealand. Following England's less than impressive start to the 1st Test against New Zealand, however, we are still favouring a home win this summer. England have shown some weakness in their batting line-up without Kevin Pietersen, however, their bowling attack is in much better shape with Broad Anderson and Finn all looking at the top of their game.
After cruising to victory against New Zealand, William Hill make England 8/1 to go unbeaten in Test match cricket for the remainder of this calendar year. Going into the second test at Headingley, England are 4/7 to win, while New Zealand are 8/1 with the draw 2/1.
England are on the drift in The Ashes cricket betting according to Ladbrokes. Following England's less than impressive start to the 1st Test against New Zealand, the firm are still favouring a home win this summer at 1/2 (from 4/9), with Australia's odds cut to 3/1 (from 7/2).
England will be very happy to hear that Graeme Swann & Tim Bresnan have been passed fit for the first test against New Zealand. As a result England are 1/2 red hot favourites to deliver victory in the first test, with New Zealand 8/1 outsiders. England can be backed at 5/4 to win the series 2-0.
Chris Gayle's 175 not out in the IPL is possibly the greatest ever T20 innings there is ever likely to be. 175 from 66 balls with 17 sixes and, had he not by his own admission "slowed down" in the middle of his innings, it could have been 200! The West Indies has given the cricket world batsmen like Gary Sobers, Brian Lara, Viv Richards and now Chris Gayle joins the greats of West Indian cricket.
Following his astonishing feat of scoring 100 in just 30 balls, William Hill are offering cricket odds of 25/1 that any professional cricketer manages a faster 100 this year. "Chris Gayle was simply stunning and it will be some feat if anyone manages to beat the 30 ball hundred this year,” said William Hill cricket betting spokesman Rupert Adams.
