Durham and England fast bowler Graham Onions has been named as the Cricket World® County Player Of The Week after helping his side to a ten-wicket win over Warwickshire by taking nine wickets in the match, including a haul of seven for 38.
After batting first, Onions chipped in with a couple of wickets in Warwickshire's first innings to help bowl them out for just 276, which was not enough to avoid the follow on. But it was in the second innings that Onions came into his own. He continued his brilliant early season form by ripping out the heart of the Warwickshire line-up taking seven for 38, and in the process became the first bowler to take 50 first-class wickets this season and also took the 200th wicket of his career.
This match-winning performance meant that Durham maintain their position at the top of the Division One table with their second consecutive victory.
Onions made his England debut earlier this season against the West Indies, taking five wickets on his first outing with the ball. He will be hoping after this magnificent effort that he will be in contention for a place in the first Ashes Test match squad.
Onions was challenged this week for the award by Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla whose 11 wickets could not help his side Sussex avoid defeat at the hands of Somerset.
