Derbyshire have confirmed that Dan Redfern has signed a new contract that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2014 season. He joins a growing list of young players that have been offered three year deals with the county, as new head coach Karl Krikken, in conjunction with chairman Chris Grant, look to build a solid base for future success and put behind them many years of underachievement.
The 21 year-old joins fellow Academy graduates Ross Whiteley, Tom Poynton, Tom Knight and Paul Borrington on the long-term deals that require contracted hours of coaching with the club’s Academy and said of the news, “It has been an enjoyable season and great to see young players get their opportunity and play a leading role in the First XI.
“With a young and talented squad, who are very much together as a unit, Derbyshire is an exciting place to be at the present time and I’m looking forward optimistically to the new season.”
Redfern’s 2011 season was a qualified success, as he hit 659 runs at an average of 39 in first-class cricket in his first nine matches, before a late season injury curtailed his progress and knocked his average down to 31.
Krikken, though, had nothing but positive words for Redfern saying, “Dan has matured as a batsman during the current campaign and produced runs for the team on a consistent basis, often when the pressure was on.
“He is a player with a huge amount of talent and we are delighted to have secured his services on a three year deal.”
Grant added, “It is testament to the work that has taken place on the Academy in recent years that Dan – and several of his fellow Academy graduates – are now becoming established members of the senior squad.”
