Joe Denly has picked up a knee injury during a game of football undertaken by the One-Day International squad as preparation for a practice session at The Oval.

Denly was reportedly tackled by Owais Shah and had to be carried off the pitch with a left knee injury. Reports say the 23-year-old was on the ground for up to 15 minutes before being taken away for assessment by England physio Kirk Russell.

He was later rated as doubtful to make the team for the opening ODI against Australia at The Oval tomorrow (Friday 4th September).

Denly made his debut for England in the ODI against Ireland last week before falling for a golden duck on his Twenty20 International debut against Australia at Old Trafford and the news is a blow for England ahead of the opening match against Australia at The Oval on Friday.

Andrew Strauss and Ravi Bopara would be expected to open the batting should Denly miss out.
