Derbyshire Announce Signing Of Chris Rogers For 2008
The 30-year-old left-hander is joining for his second spell with the County and will step into the Derbyshire line up during the 2008 season when Jayawardene is unavailable due to other playing commitments.
Rogers has been a fixture at the top of the Western Australia order since the late 90’s, scoring 22 hundreds and boasting a terrific First Class average of a shade below 50. He has represented Australia A on several occasions and is widely tipped to make the step up to the full Australian side in the near future.
He is also a proven performer in county cricket having averaged over 50 in a two season spell with Northamptonshire as well as excelling in a short period with Leicestershire in 2005 and a previous six match stay at The County Ground in 2004.
Rogers has been in good form for Western Australia this season, averaging over 40 and blazing a hundred against reigning Pura Cup champions Tasmania earlier this month.
His previous spell with Derbyshire brought 498 first-class runs in six matches, including a magnificent 156 against Durham. He also played four one-day fixtures for the Phantoms with a highest score of 93 coming against Somerset.
Arguably Rogers’ finest hour came in 2005 when he crashed 209 from only 219 balls for Leicestershire against his fellow countrymen, the touring Australians, in a match at Grace Road.
Derbyshire Head of Cricket John Morris said: “It is great news to have another player of the quality of Chris Rogers joining our playing staff for the coming season
“It was important that we again identified and got the right type of character and player in our dressing room.
“The availability of Mahela Jayawardene depends on the newly announced Indian Premier League which is due to start around mid-April and finish at the end of May.
“Chris Rogers will start the season and will play as our overseas player until Mahela Jayawardene arrives towards the end of May and he will fill in when Mahela has international commitments with Sri Lanka later in the summer. With some of the international dates yet to be confirmed we felt it important to have top class back up secured throughout the 2008 season and that is exactly what we have got with Chris.
“Mahela will leave us around 10th July to play in Sri Lanka’s series against India and Chris will again take over at this point. After that date Mahela’s international commitments are yet to be confirmed but whenever he is not here, Chris will be and that is great position to be in.”
