Derbyshire Head of Cricket John Morris has further bolstered his squad ahead of the 2009 season with the signing of Tim Groenewald from Warwickshire.
The South African born all-rounder becomes Morris’s second new signing of the close season following the recent capture of Garry Park from Durham.
South African born but English qualified, the 24-year-old has spent the past three seasons at Edgbaston and has played 17 first-class matches as well as making 48 appearances in limited-overs cricket.
A big hitting batsman and fast-medium bowler, Groenewald posted a career-best first-class score of 78 against Bangladesh A in July and his best bowling performance to date (5-24) came against Cambridge UCCE in May.
Groenewald had one year remaining on his contract at Edgbaston but agreed to terminate his deal by mutual consent before agreeing terms with the Phantoms.
Derbyshire Head of Cricket John Morris commented: “I am delighted to have added to our squad with a talented cricketer who, like Garry Park, is of a good age with plenty of improvement left in him.
“Tim is an ambitious cricketer who adds depth to our seam attack as well as being a dynamic talent with the bat. He is an excellent addition to our squad as we look forward to the 2009 season.”
