Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and batsman Sachin Tendulkar have been rested for the first three One-Day Internationals against the West Indies.

With Dhoni absent from the matches in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam and Ahmedabad, Virender Sehwag will captain the side with Parthiv Patel taking over the gloves.

Yuvraj Singh has also withdrawn from the squad for the series which begins on 29th November.

"Sachin Tendulkar has been rested. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been rested for the series. Yuvraj Singh was not considered for selection, as he has informed that he is not fully fit," a statement from the Indian board (BCCI) read.

Yuvraj and Tendulkar's absence offer an opportunity for the likes of Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane to press their claims and in the absence of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha, uncapped leg-spinner Rahul Sharma will also be aiming to impress.

The West Indies smashed 93 runs in the final seven overs of their innings and Ravi Rampaul then took four wickets to condemn India to a 16-run defeat in the third One-Day International in Ahmedabad. Darren Sammy and Andre Russell combined in belligerent fashion to haul the tourists up to a score of 260 for five after Marlon Samuels had also made 58 before India were bowled out for 244 in reply.
