Dilhara Fernando Signs For Worcestershire

Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilhara Fernando has signed to play for Worcestershire for the rest of the 2008 season.

He will replace Imran Arif as overseas player, although Arif is expected to obtain British nationality in the next few months.

Worcestershire have lost Simon Jones, Kabir Ali and Matt Mason to injury and the arrival of Fernando will boost their bowling ranks for their last two Championship fixtures and the end of the NatWest Pro40 campaign.

Director of Cricket, Steve Rhodes, said, "With the loss of Simon Jones, Kabir Ali and Matt Mason I have been looking for a quality overseas replacement as we want to finish the season on a high. It does mean we have to de-register Imran Arif who has done a wonderful job for us. Hopefully he will be back with us next season as a qualified player.

"The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has been very helpful as they want Dilhara to play some cricket rather than rest. It has been a rush to get the paperwork in place but we are just about there."

Worcestershire sit at the top of Division Two of the Championship and are still in contention to take a second consecutive Pro40 success, lying sixth with two matches still to play.
