The charity cricketers at Northern Universities Student Club Community Cricketers Elite sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead were celebrating the news of George Dockrell’s call up for the Ireland Intercontinental squad continuing the clubs amazing record of tournament award winners reaching national honours.

George 18, a talented left arm spinning all rounder played a star role in Leinster’s sensational victory over Scotland at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Tri Nations last June earning the converted Gatorade Player of the Championship award.  Such is his precious talent Phil Simmons has called him up to the full national Ireland squad for the forthcoming twenty20 World Cup qualifiers in the UAE.

George joins former North East tour member Kevin O’Brien in the squad while Fintan McAllistair, Kenny Carroll, Roger Whelan have also graduated from the tour to full national honours.  Andrew Balbirnie is widely expected to be the next and eight of Leinster previous two year tour parties are currently in the Ireland U19 World Cup squad which Andrew is captain of.

It continues to show Leinster Cricket Union’s commitment to sending their finest squads to the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead championships.

John D Holland, NUSC Director of Cricket was quick to highlight Brian O’Rourke considerable work as Leinster Cricket Development Officer adding: “Despite his yearly claims of only bringing a ‘young squad just for the experience’ it always contains some of Ireland’s future stars.

"Brian’s ability to turn raw talents into players warranting national calls up should be applauded by all in Ireland as he is a true unsung hero.  Leinster’s sensational victory over the Scottish National Academy in 2009 was a fitting testament to that ability.  Moreover, to complete the match and then host a masterclass for local cricketers showed his commitment to helping every cricketer to reach their full potential”.

The NUSC squad are already four months into their winter training programme hoping to receive the call from Brian that Leinster wish to bring another ‘young squad just for the experience’.  If they do receive the call, then he can expect an NUSC squad aiming to show that the romance of sport is that underdogs can sometimes win.

In a stunning upset the NUSC cricketers regained the much coveted Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Cricket Championship trophy with a 2 matches to 0 scoreline over their Irish counterparts from Leinster . Unseasonable weather ensured just two of the four scheduled matches were played although this allowed for a rare opportunity for sightseeing, indoor training at Durham CCCs ground and for a training session with the Durham CCC 1st X1 squad prior to their match with Lancashire Lightning in the Twenty20 Cup.

Northern Universities Student Club-Community Cricketers Elite (NUSC) sponsored by Hilton Newcastle Gateshead completed the final session of 2010 of their Winter Training Programme (WTP 2011) on Saturday. After the snow of the previous two weeks, the students were met by the welcome surprise of sunshine and warm conditions which certainly helped to improve their mood. It might have been the final session but that simply meant work, more work and hard work faced the players as weather delays meant two weeks work went into one.
