Reigning County Champions Durham have signed big-hitting pair Albie Morkel and Ross Taylor for their Friends Provident t20 campaign.
All-rounder Morkel enjoyed a spell at Durham in 2008, where he helped them reach Twenty20 Finals Day for the first time while Taylor, who recently blasted an 81-ball Test century for New Zealand against Australia, is set for his first taste of county cricket.
Taylor, 25, will join up with the squad ahead of their first match against Lancashire on 4th June while South African Morkel is also expected to be available for the whole competition following the ICC World Twenty20.
Taylor has played in 25 Twenty20 Internationals for his country while Morkel has played 24 for the Proteas.
Both players have been in action in the Indian Premier League, Taylor representing 2009 runners-up the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Morkel playing for three-time semi-finalists Chennai Super Kings.
Taylor said: “I’m really pleased to be part of Durham’sTwenty20 campaign, after their recent success in the Championship I want to be a major contributor in the team that replicates that in Twenty20 cricket. I’m excited about coming over and playing in front of a passionate North East crowd. The feedback I’ve had about the club and its supporters has been extremely positive and I can’t wait to join up with the Men in Black and start getting some results on the field.”
On his return to the Riverside, Morrkel commented: “I was eager to take up the opportunity to come back to Riverside after my first stint there in 2008. It’s a great club to be a part of, there is a lot of ambition and team spirit in the dressing room and I’m looking forward to joining back up with the team.”
