International Cricket Council has released the latest Test Rankings following the annual update which sees the Ashes rivals separated by just one point.
The annual update now sees the series from 2013/14 no more included in the formula while the ones played from 2015/16 are now given 50 per cent weightage.
India will continue to top the table with 123 points following their successful home series that includes Border-Gavaskar Trophy win, series victories against England, New Zealand, Bangladesh and South Africa.
An improve in rating points for South Africa meant they are just six points behind Virat Kohli's men at second while Australia have dropped in rating points are positioned third with 100 points - just one behind fourth placed England.
England will have a chance to topple Australia as they have a home series against South Africa lined up while the only series scheduled for the baggy green team before the Ashes is the proposed Bangladesh tour.
New Zealand have managed to sneak past Pakistan into fifth position despite the Asian team winning a 2-1 series victory in West Indies. The men from Caribbean have gained five points but will continue to remain at eighth with 75 points - 16 behind seventh placed Sri Lanka.
