England Take One Wicket Win As Lara Bows Out

Brian Lara's farewell to international cricket was ruined by a run out and a thrilling one-wicket defeat by England in the final World Cup Super Eights match on Saturday.

Kevin Pietersen's superb 100 helped England to their target of 301 with one ball to spare after out-of-form Michael Vaughan (79) scored his first fifty of the campaign.

Although both struggling sides were out of contention for the semi-finals, Lara's retirement and England coach Duncan Fletcher's imminent departure gave an enthralling match some extra significance.

Batting great Lara, who received a huge ovation, fell for 18 when Marlon Samuels (51) ran him out but a 58-ball 79 from opener Chris Gayle helped West Indies to 300 all out for the first time in the tournament.
