Essex have signed South African batsman Hashim Amla as a replacement overseas player for Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.
Kaneria has left the county to play in the Test series against Sri Lanka and Essex have been looking for a replacement player, deciding to bring in Amla, who has played 37 Tests and 16 One-Day Internationals for his country.
Amla, who will play for Essex until the end of July, told www.essexcricket.org.uk: “I am thrilled with the prospect of joining up with Essex at this important stage of the season. Promotion in the County Championship is a major focus for the team and I hope that I can help achieve this goal. I am really looking forward to the challenge."
Amla made his international debut in November 2004 although he is still to receive both a working visa and clearance to play from Cricket South Africa.
