Essex Name Squad For Gloucestershire Clash
Essex have named a 12-man squad for their LV County Championship match against Gloucestershire at The Ford County Ground, starting on Tuesday (July 22).
All-rounder James Middlebrook is added to the XI on duty in last week’s Championship fixture at Glamorgan.
Opener Alastair Cook is unavailable due to his international commitments with England during their Test match against South Africa.
Essex have no injury problems going into their last game before the weekend’s Twenty20 Cup Finals Day at the Rose Bowl.
Essex First-Team Coach Paul Grayson spoke to the Essex CCC website ahead of the game:
On Sunday’s tied NatWest Pro40 match at Leicestershire:
"Our bowling and fielding display was one of the most disappointing of the season but our run-chase was outstanding – especially by Jason Gallian (63) and Ryan ten Doeschate (99 not out). To achieve a tie in those circumstances shows the character of the team in that they never give in. At one point it looked like we were down and out but we knew that one partnership would give us a chance of getting something out of the game. A lot of credit should go to the middle and lower order for the way they went about the closing overs to manage to sneak a point and keep our unbeaten run going.
"Our bowling and fielding will have given the players a bit of a gee-up ahead of Saturday’s Twenty20 Cup Finals Day. We had a chat in the dressing room about it after the game and they know they will have to perform better than that at the weekend and also during this week’s Championship match."
On this week’s Championship match:
"At the start of the season we targeted promotion in the Championship and we are sitting quite nicely in the table at the moment. Our recent four-day form has been good – we beat Derbyshire and would have beaten Glamorgan had the first day not been washed out. If we play the way we can against Gloucester we can expect to force a good result."
On Twenty20 Cup Finals Day selection:
"Grant Flower, Chris Wright and Tim Phillips will all play in the 2nd XI this week - in a Championship match away to Somerset – before travelling on to the Rose Bowl at the end of the game on Friday. Alastair Cook will also be available for selection but Neil Dexter is unable to play against his ‘mother’ county – Kent – in our semi-final."
