Essex News Ahead Of Gloucestershire Match

Essex have named a 12-man squad for their LV County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Garon Park, Southend starting on Wednesday (August 8).

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria returns after just under a month out of action with a back injury, missing two Championship matches in that time.

Alastair Cook (England) and Tom Westley (England Under-19) are both unavailable due to international duty. Meanwhile Tim Phillips continues his rehabilitation after a shoulder injury with the second eleven in a three-day match against MCC University at Fenner’s (starting on Wednesday).

Essex go to Southend for their third festival week at Garon Park hoping to retain their unbeaten record at the venue having won two Championship and two one-day league matches since the inaugural fixtures in 2005.

Essex squad to play Gloucestershire at Garon Park, Southend, LV County Championship (Wednesday August 8 to Saturday August 11): Mark Pettini (captain), Varun Chopra, Ravinder Bopara, Grant Flower, James Foster (wicketkeeper), Ryan ten Doeschate, James Middlebrook, Andy Bichel, Graham Napier, Alex Tudor, Danish Kaneria, Tony Palladino

Essex First-Team Coach Paul Grayson spoke to the Essex CCC website (www.essexcricket.org.uk) about the return of Danish Kaneria and gave a fitness update on slow left-armer Tim Phillips.

“All credit to the lads who have bowled well over the last few weeks in the Championship games at Taunton and Bristol but Danish is a world-class bowler who bowls well on any pitch so his return will be a nice confidence-booster for the lads. We traditionally play well at Southend so with Danish back to bowl a few overs hopefully we will have a good chance of getting the points.

“Tim Phillips will be playing up at Fenner’s for the second team this week. The injection in his shoulder has worked nicely so he’ll have a bat and bowl up there with a view to coming into contention for our NatWest Pro40 game on Sunday (v Warwickshire at Southend).”
